Metastasis is responsible for the majority of carcinoma-associated deaths, yet no effective anti-metastatic therapies are currently available. This is due to a fragmentary understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying metastatic colonization of distant organs by disseminated tumor cells. Breast cancer-to-liver metastasis is associated with poor overall survival and prognosis. Using a combination of xenograft and syngeneic pre-clinical models, I aim to understand the nature of cancer cell-stromal crosstalk during the transition of recently extravasated breast cancer cells from initial dormancy/slow-proliferation to eventual metastatic colonization of the liver.
